Every Fourth of July, we come together with family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate America’s independence. We wave flags, watch fireworks, and reflect on a nation founded on the extraordinary promise of government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
It’s easy to believe our differences define us. The politics of fear and anger often drown out our shared values. But as I’ve traveled throughout Indiana’s Second District, I’ve found something very different.
From Argos to Peru to Mishawaka to Goshen, I’ve met parents working hard to raise their kids, small business owners doing their best to stay open, factory workers providing for their families, teachers helping shape the future, farmers taking care of the land, and seniors who just want the dignity of a healthy and secure retirement.
They’re Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. And despite what we are so often led to believe, they all want the same things. They want safe neighborhoods, good schools, affordable healthcare, and decent jobs that help them provide for their families. They want to know their kids can have a better life than they had. They want a government that listens and works for them.
Those aren’t Republican or Democratic goals. They’re American goals.
The American Dream Is Still Worth Fighting For
Representative government isn’t supposed to happen behind closed doors. It happens in town halls, community centers, school cafeterias, libraries, churches, and neighborhoods all over our district. It requires leaders who are accessible, accountable, and willing to listen to people, even when they disagree.
Throughout this campaign, I’ve promised to be that kind of representative.
No matter the issue, we don’t need more politicians talking at us. We need public servants who are willing to sit down with us.
I still believe in the American Dream. If you work hard, play by the rules, and look out for your neighbors, you deserve a fair chance at a good life. That means an economy that fairly rewards a day’s work, healthcare families can afford, strong public schools, and opportunities for the next generation to succeed here in Indiana.
conversation over conflict
As we celebrate Independence Day, I hope you remember that the America our Founding Fathers envisioned was never one where we all agreed. Instead, it is one in which our disagreements and the perpetual search for common ground make us stronger and freer with each successive generation.
If we love our country enough to celebrate its founding, we can also love our neighbors enough to hear one another out. We can choose conversation over conflict, service over self-interest, calm instead of chaos, and dedication instead of division. We can remember that together, we win.
That’s a vision worth celebrating, not just on the Fourth of July but every day of the year. It’s a vision I will always fight for on behalf of all Hoosiers in the Second District.
